Walking on the Tiger's Tail : when facing danger, one behaves with wisdom, understanding the peril without provoking it, remaining both quiet & determined (1). Most of the titles found on this album were inspired by Toaist stories full of this paradoxical poetry.
Butterfly Dream : After dreaming that he was a butterfly, Zhuangzi woke up wondering whether he was still Zhuangzi, or rather a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuangzi (2).
Yielding Water : the irresistible strength of water lies in its yielding quality. Therefore, weaknesss can erode the stone, flexibility can subdue the strong & the rigid (3).
Totsu ! is an exclamation supposedly uttered when a Zen student achieves enlightment. The sound also imitates the dry cracle the pawlonia leaf makes as it scratches the ground upon falling.
Wingless Flight : It is easy to stop walking: the trouble is to walk without touching the ground. You have heard of winged creatures flying. You have never heard of flying without wings. You have heard of men being wise with knowledge. You have never heard of men wise without knowledge (4).
I wrote this music after a tough period in my life which paradoxically brought me to a kind of tranquillity that I was both experiencing & searching. This led me to Chinese ancient books - symbols of a universal force & wisdom. Once relieved, I wanted to share & to build on the music of those moments with two very dear friends : Art Lande, the piano player who strongly influenced my first two albums « Miracles »(1989) & « Zanzibar »(1992), & his long time musical partner, Paul McCandless, outstanding wind player. The three of us have such a great understanding of one another that I wanted a special orchestration for this reunion. Thus the choice of a « bass free » band, in which each of us would take up the bass role. The highlighted percussions of Jamey Haddad recall the distant lands where those rhythms find their roots.
I would like to deeply thank all those who expressed their friendship when my health was weak, & I dedicate this music to those who are now facing the Tiger. Music has sustained me as a mother sustains her child, & Music reminds us that each second is a miracle !
Walking on the Tiger's Tail : c’est se conduire avec sagesse face au danger : le connaître sans le provoquer, en restant serein & résolu à la fois (1). De nombreux titres de cet album ont été inspirés par des histoires Taoistes pleines de cette poésie paradoxale.
Butterfly Dream : après avoir rêvé qu’il était un papillon, Tchouang Tseu se réveilla se demandant s’il était toujours Tchouang Tseu rêvant qu’il était un papillon ou un papillon rêvant qu’il était Tchouang Tseu (2).
Yielding Water : l’irrésistible force de l’eau, c’est qu’elle ne résiste pas. C’est cette faiblesse qui lui permet d’éroder la pierre, cette souplesse qui lui fait dépasser le rigide & l’inflexible (3).
Totsu ! c’est l’exclamation que l’étudiant zen est sensé émettre lorsqu’il atteint l’illumination. C’est aussi le son sec & craquant de la feuille de l’arbre pawlonia tombant à terre.
Wingless Flight : Il est facile de s'arrêter de marcher; il est plus difficile de marcher sans toucher le sol. Vous avez entendu parler de voler avec des ailes, mais jamais de voler sans ailes. J’ai entendu dire que l’on comprend par la connaissance, mais pas encore qu’on pouvait comprendre par la non-connaissance (4).
J’ai écrit cette musique après une période difficile de ma vie qui m’a paradoxalement mené à une sérénité à la fois vécue & recherchée. D’où l’attirance pour les livres anciens chinois, symboles d’une sagesse & d’une force universelle. Délivré, j’ai voulu partager & construire la musique de ces instants avec deux amis très chers : le pianiste Art Lande, qui marqua mes deux premiers disques « Miracles »(1989) & « Zanzibar »(1992), et son partenaire musical de toujours, le souffleur Paul McCandless. Nous avons tous les trois une telle entente & un tel respect l’un pour l’autre qu’il fallait pour cette réunion une orchestration spéciale. D’où le choix de ne pas avoir de bassiste, pour réserver ce rôle à chacun d’entre nous, l’un après l’autre. L’importance des percussions de Jamey Haddad rappelle les terres lointaines d’où s’enracinent ces rythmes.
J’aimerais remercier profondément tous ceux qui m’ont témoigné leur amitié quand la santé m’a fait défaut, et voudrais dédier cette musique à ceux qui maintenant affrontent le Tigre. La musique m’a porté, comme la mère porte son enfant, et nous rappelle que chaque seconde est un miracle !
